Psychology research suggests experiences make us happier than things. But that does not mean experiences are always the better gift.
The case for experience gifts
Experiences create memories. They are inherently shareable. They do not clutter a home. For someone who values doing over having, an experience is almost always the stronger choice.
When physical gifts are better
Physical gifts are tangible. They can be kept, used daily, and touched. A piece of jewellery, a quality homeware item, a beautiful book — these are present in the recipient's life every time they encounter them.
Choosing between them
Ask: does this person prioritise experiences or objects? What occasion is this for? A 30th birthday warrants something more lasting than a dinner voucher. An anniversary warrants something that will be remembered.

Experience vs physical is the wrong frame. The right frame is: what does this person value, and what does this occasion call for?
